Manchester United vs Manchester City - Preview

Created on 24 Mar., 2014 10:24 PM GMT

Manchester City travel to Old Trafford to face-off against their local rivals Manchester United in a very important Manchester Derby. Manchester City, currently in 3rd position with 63 points, look to move above Liverpool into 2nd position with a victory over the Red Devils bringing them all but 3 points off currently leaders Chelsea. Reigning Premier League champions Manchester United however currently reside in 7th position with 51 points and a win over Manchester City tomorrow would see them draw level on points with Everton. Manchester United have endured a rocky season under new manager David Moyes, but after a recent run of good form (including turning over a 2-0 loss to Olympiakos to move forward in the Champions League) David Moyes hopes to reward Manchester United supporters with a victory over Manchester City tomorrow night. Manchester City Manager; Manuel Pellegrini today said how he is more focused on winning the Premier League title than the Manchester Derby.
Tale of the Tape:
Manchester City have successfully defeated Manchester United 3 out of the 4 times the two teams have met. Wayne Rooney is the top goalscorer in Manchester derbies with 11 goals in the fixture. Manchester City have successfully won more games away from the Etihad (7 games) than Manchester United have won home at Old Trafford.
Players to watch out for:
David Silva - 9/10 times when Manchester City are playing their very best football, David Silva is usually the guy at the centre of it all. Silva has managed 8 assists and 5 goals this season for Manchester City and has created a chance every 22 minutes for his team-mates, the best in the league. David Silva is arguably the best player in the Manchester City team as he is the creative heartbeat that the team thrives on and if Silva performs to the best of his abilities against Manchester United tomorrow night, then the Red Devils may find themselves in trouble.
Juan Mata - Manchester United's big January transfer, Juan Mata has quickly adapted to the style that Manchester United play but we are yet to see the best that the Spaniard has to offer. With Robin Van Persie out of the Derby due to injury, Manchester United will be looking for Mata to perform something special if they want to get something out of this match. Also with RVP out due to injury, Mata was played back in his normal CAM position (as opposed to playing out wide) and created 5 clear-cut chances in their 2-0 victory over West Ham and along side team-mate Shinji Kagawa, the duo created 80% of United's chances that game, so if Mata can play aswell as his ability shows then United have a great chance to take down Manchester City.
Predicted Line-Ups:
Manchester City: Hart; Zabaleta, Lescott, Kompany, Kolarov; Fernandinho, Toure, Milner; Nasri, Silva, Negredo.
Manchester United: De Gea; Evra, Vidic, Jones, Rafael; Carrick, Fletcher; Mata, Rooney, Kagawa; Welbeck.
