American Herculez Gomez was on target as Santos Laguna downed Seattle Sounders 1-0 in their CONCACAF Champions League semi-final first leg.
Gomez fired home a rebound on 54 minutes as the visitors claimed a vital away goal and the ascendancy ahead of the return leg in Mexico.
Santos were almost caught out moments before when Oswaldo Sanchez was forced to parry away Osvaldo Alonso's long-range strike, but the Liga MX side quickly broke to open the scoring.
Carlos Quintero lead the counterattack and saw his shot blocked by Marcus Hahnemann only for Gomez to slot home the rebound.
Santos will return home for the second leg next Tuesday.
