CONCACAF Champions League wrap: Alajuelense go top
Costa Rica Invierno champions Alajuelense have gone top of Group 6 in the CONCACAF Champions League after a 1-0 victory over Real Esteli.
A 49th-minute penalty from Alvaro Sanchez was enough for Alajuelense to overcome the visitors from Nicaragua on Wednesday.
The win has taken Alajuelense to seven points in Group 6, two ahead of Tigres UNAL of Mexico ahead of the clash between the two sides on October 24, which will decide the group winner, who will advance to the Championship Round.
In Group 8, W Connection's Clyde Leon denied Guadalajara victory when he scored in the 66th minute.
The visitors from Mexico took the lead in the 39th minute when Erick Torres scored from Omar Esparza's cross but Leon equalised in the second half to snatch a draw for Trinidad and Tobago's W Connection.
The result means Guadalajara remain three points behind Group 8-leaders Xelaju of Guatemala with the two teams still to play each other for a spot in the Championship Round.
Meanwhile, Marathon of Honduras defeated Trinidad and Tobago's Caledonia AIA 2-1 but cannot overhaul Group 4's top side Seattle Sounders.
Marathon are on four points, while the Sounders have nine after a perfect record over their three group games so far with a match against the Honduran club to come.
