Copa del Rey wrap: Ronaldo fires Real Madrid into quarters
By Football News
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick to help 10-man Real Madrid defeat Celta Vigo 4-0 and progress to the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.
Ronaldo's side headed into the second leg of their round-of-16 tie at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday trailing 2-1, but they emphatically overcame their first-leg deficit to win 5-2 on aggregate and set up a date with Valencia in the next phase.
The Portuguese superstar's latest haul of goals saw him become the seventh-highest scorer in Real Madrid's history, overtaking Pirri in the club's all-time rankings with 174 goals.
Ronaldo opened the scoring with a long-range effort two minutes into the match, and added his second on 24 minutes with a cool finish from close range to put the hosts in control.
But Celta would come out of their shell in the second half, creating a number of chances as Madrid, dented by Sergio Ramos' 73rd-minute red card, were forced to play the latter stages on the back foot.
However, Ronaldo would put nerves around the Bernabeu to rest with his third goal four minutes from the end, before Sami Khedira made it 4-0 in the 89th minute to seal the home side's passage into the next round.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Mallorca scored a 2-1 away win against Sevilla but the damage had already been done in the first leg of their tie as Sevilla registered a 6-2 aggregate victory.
They will now meet Zaragoza in the quarter-finals, after they defeated Levante 2-0 for a 3-0 aggregate win.
Zaragoza headed into the second leg against Levante with a slender 1-0 advantage and it was doubled in the 23rd minute when Franco Zuculini found the back of the net.
Paco Montanes put the result beyond doubt 10 minutes after half-time with another goal for Zaragoza in front of their adoring fans at La Romareda.
