Copa Sudamericana: Colon 1 Cerro Porteno 2
Sep 28, 2012 6:58 AM GMT
Paraguay's Cerro Porteno enjoyed a 2-1 win in their Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 first-leg clash against Colon of Argentina in a fiery affair.#
Thursday's game at Colon's home stadium erupted in the 51st minute when the hosts' Ruben Ramirez and Cerro Porteno's Walter Lopez clashed, with both players eventually being sent off.
With the score locked at 1-1, both sides went looking for a winning goal despite going down to 10 players each and it was the visitors from Paraguay that succeeded when Roberto Nanni finished off Edgar Gonzalez's fine pass in the 85th minute.
The victory puts Cerro Porteno in a great position to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana with the second-leg to come at their home stadium.
Cerro Porteno led after 20 minutes when Julio Dos Santos set up Pedro Benitez for a goal.
Colon should have equalised in the 40th minute but Ivan Moreno y Fabianesi failed to convert a penalty, however the home team were level at half-time thanks to Lucas Mugni's goal in first-half stoppage time.
And it was Nanni who scored the decisive goal, coming off the bench to secure a vital win for Cerro Porteno ahead of the second leg on October 23.
