Eastwood Town 1 - 2 Marine
Danny Mitchley’s debut goal gave Marine all three points at Coronation Park on Saturday, as they ran out 2-1 winners against bottom club Eastwood Town.
Kevin Lynch’s men had to rescue a losing position for the second consecutive away game, and did so by once again digging deep to overcome determined opponents, having fallen behind inside the first minute from the penalty spot, Paolo Piliero converting from 12 yards after Matty Brown had brought down Lavell White.
Marine’s response was immediate, Mitchley getting away from his marker to shoot towards the bottom corner with Richard Stainsby pulling off a good save to turn the ball around a post.
Stainsby made another great save from the resultant corner, Brown meeting the kick from close range with the ‘keeper blocking the shot at the expense of another corner.
Joel Holland put in a lively display for the Badgers on the left wing and provided a testing cross for White, the forward going close to doubling their lead with a glancing header which slid narrowly wide of the target.
Eastwood striker Ewan Clarke had to leave the field on a stretcher with a serious ankle injury after an innocuous challenge on Liam Rice, the unfortunate player clearly in pain and we wish him a speedy recovery.
Mitchley had a couple of first time shots go well wide before White got on the end of another Holland centre, this time getting a foot to the ball but with the same result as it went wide of Callum Williams’ post.
The Mariners squared the match on the hour, Mitchley involved again to put Liam Dawson away to fire an assured finish in to the bottom corner with the outside of his boot from the edge of the box.
Stainsby was fortunate to stay on the field after flattening Mitchley as the offside striker ran through, the gloveman catching the Altrincham loan signing around the neck with a flying tackle to receive a caution.
Tempers frayed a little with bookings for both sides, but Marine won the game with five minutes left, a nice move down the left leading to Mitchley unleashing a rocket from 25 yards that flew past Stainsby to cap an eventful afternoon for the forward.
Piliero had a free kick to level right at the death but could not find a way past Williams, as the Mariners extended their unbeaten run to six league matches.
