Eredivisie Preview: PSV out to extend lead, Ajax on the comeback trail
PSV will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the Eredivisie when they make the trip to face AZ on Saturday.
Phillip Cocu has seen his men kick off their new campaign in style, remaining unbeaten in their opening seven games including a 4-0 victory over title holders Ajax last Sunday with an impressive showing from Park Ji-Sung.
The 32-year-old, who re-joined the club on loan from English side QPR in August , scored in the 68th minute after setting up goals for both Jetro WIllems and Oscar Hiljemark and will look to keep up his form on Saturday.
Two teams who will be hoping he does not continue in the same vein though are PEC Zwolle, in second, and third-placed Twente, who will be aiming to close the gap on the leaders when they face NAC Breda and Groningen respectively.
Ron Jans’ side have seen a strong start halted with losses in their last two league fixtures and they will look to striker Guyon Fernandez to get back on track, with the prolific 27-year-old having not scored since August 24.
Traditional title favourites Feyenoord and champions Ajax have endured stuttering starts and will look to progress up the league when they come up against ADO Den Haag and Go Ahead Eagles.
Feyenoord’s clash on Sunday will see them aiming for their fifth unbeaten league game in a row, but they may find themselves a little fatigued after facing Dordrecht in the KNVB Beker on Thursday.
Ajax, on the other hand, will be eager to bounce back after their thrashing by PSV last weekend, which was preceded by a defeat of the same score to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.
However, while they tussle to compete at the top, NEC will be battling for their first league win since February when they face fifth-placed Vitesse on Sunday and they will be buoyed by an 8-0 victory over Harkemase Boys in the cup on Tuesday.
They will need to solidify their defence for the match though, with their previous four league matches ending in draws after they went behind in three of them and failed to get over the line with their fight backs.
Both RKC Waalwijk and Heracles will aim for three points this weekend after being defeated in their last two league encounters, though only one will be able to gain the boost when they face off at the Mandemakers Stadion on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Heerenveen and Utrecht host Cambuur and Roda JC respectively.
