Girard blasts leaky backline
By Football News
Montpellier head coach Rene Girard has lashed out at his defenders after a 2-1 loss to Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Surprise Ligue 1 winners last season, Montpellier are yet to win a game during their first season in UEFA's elite competition, and they are also struggling in the defence of their title, sitting a distant 16th behind early front runners Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille.
Girard feels the team need to change radically if they are to turn their season around, and knows it is down to him to find the solutions.
"I'm disappointed," he said.
"We must stop giving gifts. I say a defender must be a defender. I have experienced guys playing in defence. Their behaviour bothers me a little.
"So we have to change radically, do something different to what we've been doing up until now. There is not a lot of difference in what we've been doing for the last weeks.
"We try to explain what the problem is but apparently it doesn't go into their heads. In my position, I have to find solutions to get us out of this mental state."
