Gomez looks to put on a show

Fit-again Germany striker Mario Gomez is looking forward to demonstrating his class in the friendly against France on Wednesday.

Several injuries to first-choice players, combined with a clean of bill of health for Gomez, means the Bayern Munich centre-forward is due to lead the line in what will be his first appearance since Euro 2012.

"I am really looking forward to the game," he said.

"It's been a long time since I was with the national team. Obviously it's great for me to play without pain and be fully fit. So I am really excited to play again. And ... it seems I am going to."

Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff said the squad's lengthy list of enforced absentees is not an excuse for a poor performance as they try to break a six-match winless streak in games against neighbours France.

"We would like to play against France with our best team but this time of the year there are always some injuries," Bierhoff said.

"Players come out of the winter break and that's simply something we have to accept. But we already have shown that we have a great squad - now other players have the chance to present themselves.

"The coaches will have an eye on that. Of course we want to play good and be successful. We want improve as a team. That is something the coach (Joachim Loew) can tell you more about."

A trio of Borussia Dortmund players have withdrawn from the squad, with defender Marcel Schmelzer (ankle), playmaker Mario Goetze (viral infection) and forward Marco Reus (groin) all sidelined.
