Guardiola given new role
The critics of the Pep Guardiola way at Bayern may already be creeping out of the woodwork after the opening week of the Bundesliga season but the that hasn't stopped the Spanish coach from snapping up a new role with Bayern's club sponsor adidas as the face of the Champions League's Gamedayplus promotion.
The former Barca manager, who has won the European Cup/Champions League as both a player - Barcelona 1992 - and twice as a manager - Barcelona '09,'11 - has been picked by adidas to front the launch, jumping on the popular manager's decision to move to the tournament's reigning champions this summer.
Bayern's victory over Borussia Dortmund last season may have hogged the headlines on the pitch for the Munich based club but off the pitch it was Guardiola's appointment that stole the back pages. Considered one of the hottest managerial talents on the planet right now, Guardiola had his choice of clubs to go to before eventually snubbing interest from Chelsea - and speculatated interest from Manchester City - opting instead to head to Germany and to a Munich side that was, at the time, on the verge of a spectacular treble.
Thanks to the efforts of Jupp Heynckes, Bayern's dream became a reality and Guardiola must now try and live up to the near perfection of the Bayern side of last season, with some in the German press already claiming his new tactics are upsetting members of the squad, in particular Bastian Schweinsteiger, who is now playing as a lone defensive midfielder in the heart of The Bavarians midfield.
Despite the early criticism to his reign, Pep will now be an ambassador for his new club's sponsors as the designers at adidas look to profit off the immense marketing capability of both their Champions League winning club and their ever celebrated new manager.
"It is with great pride that I have signed with adidas as one of their ambassadors," said Guardiola upon his appointment.
"adidas have an amazing heritage but at the same time they are also proud to be at the cutting edge of football and these are two qualities that I really admire. I’m looking forward to fronting their forthcoming UEFA Champions League campaign and fans can look forward to a further announcement in the next few weeks."
A Champions League winning manager, the reigning European Cup holders and the brand's main sponsor. It's a marketing match made in heaven.
