South African Football Association has decided against sacking Bafana Bafana head coach Gordon Igesund following poor results by the Senior National Team under his guidance.
Gordon Igesund has failed to deliver since taking over in 2012, with his objectives being to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and win the 2013 CAF Africa Cup of Nations at home. To make the matters worse the coach has also failed to win 2014 CAF African Nation Championship (CHAN) at home and that was only contested by home based players.
The meeting that was held by the SAFA members at the SAFA house on Thursday has came with the outcome that the 57-year coach will continue to work with South Africa until his contract expires in June this year.
The five time winning South African Premier Soccer League coach will get his charges ready for the friendly match against five times World Champions Brazil at the FNB Stadium on March 5th. The Brazil squad looks to be the strong one and it will be a good test for South Africa that is targeting 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2022 edition.
Brazil coach Felipe Scolari has included Barcelona star Neymar, Fernadinho of Manchester City and Chelsea’ Willian. But Gordon Igesund shouldn’t be intimidated by that as he was able to beat European and World Champions Spain 1-0 in November contesting with the likes of Alvaro Negredo, Andres Iniesta, and Iker Casillas.
