Koeman's delight as Feyenoord take a step closer to European qualification
Feyenoord boss Ronald Koeman has declared the club's "goal" achieved after they moved closer to securing European football next season.
A 2-0 victory over closest rivals Vitesse strengthened Koeman’s side’s hold on third place in the Eredivisie, moving them level on points with second-placed PSV and eight clear of Twente in fifth.
The former Dutch international defender saw his team eliminated from this season's UEFA Europa League in the qualifying stages by Sparta Prague and immediately set his sights on earning a place in next season's competition.
“Our goal has been achieved,” Koeman told the club’s official website. “We know the importance of European football, and Feyenoord almost cannot miss that now.
"On 12th May (the final week of the league season) we are ready to seal the place."
The club now require just one point to secure UEFA Europa League football next season but rather than settling for third place, Koeman has not given up hope of moving above PSV to secure a top-two finish.
“We are going in the coming weeks to do everything to finish as high as possible,” he added.
“We set up very quickly and aggressively (against Vitesse) pressed them, making sure Vitesse was not given the chance to break through the game. That’s a compliment to my team’s worth.”
