La Liga: Real Betis 2 Atletico Madrid 4
Sep 27, 2012 3:51 AM GMT
Atletico Madrid have taken second spot in La Liga with a 4-2 comeback victory over Real Betis, including a brace from Radamel Falcao.
Betis led 1-0 and then 2-1 at home but a soft penalty to Falcao early in the second half got Atletico back on track and with the hosts losing two players to red cards, the visitors eventually took the win on Wednesday.
Salvador Agra gave the home team the lead in the 26th minute in embarrassing circumstances for Atletico goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo, with the Betis winger's cross bouncing past everyone, including the visiting shot-stopper, to nestle inside the far post.
Betis' lead lasted just two minutes before Falcao got a toe to Raul Garcia's shot and deflected the ball into the net.
Betis led at half-time courtesy of another fortunate goal after Atletico defender Juanfran deflected Juan Carlos' cross for an own goal in the final minute of the first half.
Atletico were back level in the 48th minute when Falcao fell in the box under pressure from Damien Perquis.
But while the Polish defender had his arm around Falcao, it was hard to see how the contact forced the Colombian striker to the ground.
Perquis was sent off, Falcao scored from the spot and seven minutes later the visitors from Madrid took the lead when Diego Costa smashed the ball home from a corner at the back post.
Atletico wrapped up the win in the third minute of second-half stoppage time when Arda Turan got clear down the left wing and crossed to Garcia, who struck the ball into the roof of the net.
The two-goal victory moves Atletico Madrid to 13 points, just two points behind La Liga-leaders Barcelona after five rounds, while Betis are sixth on nine points.
