Liga MX Wrap: Toluca, Atlas share spoils, Santos slips up
Toluca have been denied the chance to move third in the Liga MX as they had to come from behind to draw 1-1 with Atlas.
With Leon failing to overcome Tigres UANL on Saturday, Toluca entered Sunday's clash against 15th-placed Atlas knowing victory would take them to third with an eight-point gap to leaders America.
After a scoreless first half, substitute Omar Bravo put Atlas ahead in the 66th minute and Toluca had to wait until a 77th-minute spot kick from Pablo Velazquez to secure a draw.
The draw took Toluca to 26 points and left them in fifth spot in the Liga MX standings after 16 rounds, while Leon sit a point and a position ahead of Jose Cardozo's team.
Cruz Azul moved up to third on 28 points with a 1-0 win over Morelia, thanks to Joao Rojas' 77th-minute strike.
The victory against Morelia means Cruz Azul trail second-placed Santos Laguna (32 points) by only four points after the Torreon-based club succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Chiapas.
America were held to a scoreless draw away to Queretaro but remain clear at the top of the standings.
Tijuana and Monterrey collected the biggest wins of the weekend with the former thrashing bottom club Atlante 4-1 and the latter winning 3-0 away to Veracruz.
Dario Benedetto notched a brace for Tijuana in a match where both teams finished with 10 players.
Tijuana lost Fernando Arce to a straight red card with six minutes left in the first half, while Atlante saw Sergio Perez take an early shower in the 71st minute after his second yellow card.
In Veracruz, Humberto Suazo scored a double for Monterrey either side Neri Cardozo's strike on the stroke of half-time as the visitors claimed their first win in five matches.
Elsewhere, Puebla drew 1-1 with Pachuca and Guadalajara defeated Pumas UNAM 1-0.
