Ligue 1 wrap: Saint-Etienne demolish Ajaccio to go fourth
By Football News
Saint-Etienne moved up to fourth in Ligue 1 on Wednesday night after smashing Ajaccio 4-2 at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard.
Christophe Galtier's side celebrated their Coupe de la Ligue triumph at the weekend in style, demolishing the Corsican side, who are still looking over their shoulders at the drop zone in 15th.
Adrian Mutu had given the visitors an early lead, but Saint-Etienne top-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck soon after to restore parity.
Mathieu Bodmer and Renaud Cohade netted within minutes of each other soon after the break to put the home side in charge and Aubameyang put the tie to bed late on after Mutu had grabbed a second with 15 minutes to play.
Rennes, who were beaten by Saint Etienne in Sunday's final continued their poor form, going down 2-1 to bottom-of-the-table Troyes.
Frederic Antonetti had announced ahead of the game that he will be stepping down at the end of the season and they started poorly as Jean-Christophe Bahebeck and Jeremie Brechet managed to find the net within the opening half hour.
Julian Feret notched a consolation goal from the penalty spot before half-time, but it was not enough for Rennes who remain without a win since February 10.
