A special welcome to the 21st century is due to Premier League titleholder Manchester United.
After much delay, the club finally launched an official Twitter account, @ManUtd, allowing supporters around the world to check-in on their favorite club's activity ona 24/7 basis. Over 400,000 have already chosen to follow the club.
The page features a black background with a siding that reads, "We All Follow Man United." Launching on July 10, the club's first tweet said, "New era, same spirit. The season starts here. Let's do this. #mufc". The page proceeded to display art of Manchester United legends Denis Law, George Best, and Sir Bobby Charlton. A propaganda-esque piece of art depicted David Moyes with the phrase "The Beginning" written below the manager's head. Pictures of the team's anticipated arrival in Bangkok followed, including one showing the city's media swarming the side. United will play Singha All-Star XI at Rajamangala Stadium on Saturday. The tour's official hashtag is #mutour.
After just days of posting, the page is awash with photos including shots from team training and David Moyes's pressers.
In addition to joining Twitter, which is more than seven years old, the club started posting on massive Chinese microblog Sina Weibo. About 114,000 are following that account.
Manchester United's first foray into social media came via its well-oiled Facebook page. Presence on that social media platform has amassed more than 34 million "likes" for the club that says its has the world's most popular football team. While Twitter seems to be preferred amongst modern social networkers, Facebook remains the web's most populous site having over 1 billion users.
