Martinez dispels Becchio rumour

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has played down a move for Leeds striker Luciano Becchio.

Rumours that the 29-year-old attended the Latics' FA Cup third-round replay victory away to Bournemouth on Tuesday have been dispelled by Martinez.

The striker missed his own club's replay at Birmingham that night because of illness but, when asked if the Argentine had attended at the game at Dean Court, the Spaniard was unsure.

"I don't think so," Martinez told reporters. "If he was, I didn't know about it.

"I am not going to mention any names. We are looking for the right player, somebody that can help us, but the focus is on the players we already have here.

"I will never go into a position of mentioning names of other players that are involved with other football clubs.

"I don't think it is respectful. I don't like it when people do it about our players in the middle of a season and I would never do that."

Wigan have already made additions in the January transfer window, including Honduras international Roger Espinoza and Manchester United striker Angelo Henriquez on loan.

But Martinez admits that they will try to bring in another defender after losing Ivan Ramis until the end of the season with a knee injury.

"We have got a little bit of room to bring one or two players," he said.

"I spoke with the chairman yesterday and the injury to Ivan has put us in that situation."
