Mathieu Valbuena



Mathieu Valbuena was born in Bruges, Gironde on 28 September 1984. An attacking midfielder and winger, he is known for his pace, dribbling, creativity and technical ability, as well as his work rate, which is often demonstrated by his willingness to track back and help out defensively. At a height of 5 ft 6 inches, Valbuena is small in stature and is nicknamed 'le petit vélo', which translates to 'the little bike'.

Valbuena played youth team football for Blanquefort, before joining Bordeaux's academy in 2001. After two years with the club, during which he mostly competed for the under-18s, he was released.
