Futbola Skola METTA was first established as a senior side in May 2006, although the team had previously existed as a youth academy since the turn of the millennium. From 2007, the school united with Latvijas Universitāte to enter a team into the Latvian football league system and that team became Futbola Skola METTA / Latvijas Universitāte. The playing squad is primarily made up of students from the University of Latvia, giving them a chance to study and play football at the same time.
Ahead of the 2007 season, Futbola Skola METTA / Latvijas Universitāte were entered into the Latvian First League, the country's second tier. After finishing 4th in their first season, the club spent several more years in the division, consolidating their status. Then, in 2011, they finished top of the league and gained promotion to the Virsliga ahead of the following campaign.
To date, the side have been unable to claim any of Latvia's major honours. Their debut season in the top flight saw them finish in 8th place, while at the end of their second season, in 2013, they had dropped once place to 9th. So far, Metta / LU's best performance in the Latvian Football Cup has been reaching the last 16, which they have done on several occasions, and the team have not yet appeared in any of the major UEFA competitions.
Mārtiņš Milašēvičs and Gatis Kalniņš have both been named as the club's Player of the Year since reaching the Virsliga. Some of the other notable players to have represented the side include Vladislavs Kozlovs and Vladislavs Gabovs, both of whom have gone on to play for Latvia's national team.
Metta / LU play their home matches at Stadions Arkādija in Riga. The venue is currently the smallest in Latvia's top flight and is able to hold a capacity crowd of just 250 people.
