Bio

Michael Carrick was born in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear on 28 July 1981. A central midfielder, who primarily operates in a defensive midfield role, he is known for his accurate passing, creative talents and positional sense.

Carrick spent most of his youth at Wallsend Boys Club, before joining West Ham United's academy in 1997. Having previously played as a striker, he was converted into a central midfield player and helped the team to win the 1998–99 FA Youth Cup. Carrick broke into the club's first team during the 1999-00 season, making eight league appearances for West Ham and several more during loan spells at Swindon and Birmingham. From the 2000-01 season onwards, he became an important first team player.

After West Ham suffered relegation from the Premier League, Carrick spent a season in the First Division and was named in the second tier's PFA Team of the Year. However, the team failed to return to the Premier League at the first attempt, and he subsequently completed a transfer to rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2004. Although he initially struggled to break into the team during Jacques Santini's time in charge, he became a first team regular after Martin Jol took over and impressed with his performances.

The summer of 2006 saw Carrick move to Manchester United, for an initial fee of £14 million. His first three seasons brought about huge success, as United claimed three consecutive Premier League titles, as well as the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League. Carrick collected his fourth league title in 2010-11, before winning a fifth in 2012–13, during Sir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge. He received widespread individual praise, was given a place in the PFA Team of the Year and was named as the Manchester United Players' Player of the Year.

At international level, Carrick made his senior England debut in 2001. However, despite his club record, he has found it difficult to break into the national team on a regular basis, in part due to the presence of players like Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. Carrick made the final squad for the 2006 World Cup and made one appearance during the tournament, in a victory over Ecuador. However, he was an unused member of Fabio Capello's 2010 World Cup squad and was left out of Roy Hodgson's 23-man squad for Euro 2012.
