About Olympiakos Piraeus

Olympiakos Football Club, often referred to as Olympiakos Piraeus, was first established in March 1925 as a result of a merger between two previous teams, Sport and Football Club of Piraeus and Piraeus Fans Club FC. Olympiakos are the most successful team in the history of Greek football and also the country's most popular team. They are amongst the few clubs to have never been relegated from the top flight.

The team maintains a strong rivalry with Panathinaikos, which is known as the 'Derby of the eternal enemies'. The derby match is largely centred around the two clubs being the most successful in the country, but also includes cultural, regional and class elements. It is widely considered the most important match in the Greek calendar. Over the years, Olympiakos have had the better head-to-head record in derby matches.

In total, Olympiakos have won 40 league titles, which is more than any other side. Their first era of success was the 1930s, with the club winning six league titles over the course of the decade. Since the turn of the 21st century, they have dominated the division, winning titles in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. The club has also lifted the Greek Cup 25 times, which is another national record. Olympiakos have a long history in continental competitions, although so far they have never won a major European trophy. Their best performance came in 1998-99, when they reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Over the years, some of the world's best-known footballers have represented Olympiakos, with examples including Stelios Giannakopoulos, Rivaldo, Christian Karembeu and Yaya Touré. Perhaps the team's best ever striker was Giorgos Sideris, who remains their record goal scorer.

Olympiakos play home games at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, which opened back in 1896. Today, the stadium has a 5-star rating from UEFA and is able to hold a capacity crowd of 32,115.
