Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is hopeful that centre-back Fabricio Coloccini will be back in action within two weeks.
The Argentine defender has made only 19 league starts this season having been hampered by injuries and personal issues that saw him nearly leave St James' Park in January.
Coloccini missed Saturday's 1-0 loss at Swansea with a back problem but Pardew is confident the injury is not too serious.
"I don't think it's that worrying," Pardew told Sky Sports. "But it is a back injury, so we have to be careful.
"I think (he'll be back in) a couple of weeks."
The diagnosis means Coloccini will miss Newcastle's Europa League clash with Anzhi Makhachkala on Thursday.
He could be in line for a return against Wigan on March 17 as Newcastle look to steer further clear of the relegation zone.
