Pre-Season Friendly: Greuther Furth 6 Celtic 2
11 Jul, 2013 12:53 AM GMT
Celtic’s disappointing start to pre-season continued on Tuesday as they were beaten 6-2 by German side Greuther Furth.
Goals from Georgios Samaras and Mikael Lustig were not enough to give the Scottish Premier League side a first warm-up victory ahead of the new campaign, as they were comfortably outplayed.
Neil Lennon’s men came into the match off the back of defeats against FC Sevastopol and CFR Cluj, but they looked to be on the right track when Samaras scored after just three minutes.
The Greek striker did well to finish from close range after the ball had been cut back to him from the byline.
Within eight minutes, though, Greuther were level, as striker Nikola Djurdjic found space inside the box to fire past Fraser Forster in the Celtic goal.
The German side went ahead after 34 minutes when Celtic failed to deal with a corner and Kevin Kraus powered the ball home at the back post.
Lustig drew the Scottish champions level before the break, pouncing to slam home the rebound after Samaras had linked well with Anthony Stokes, only to see his initial effort blocked.
However, from there it was all one-way traffic.
Greuther restored their advantage from the penalty spot a minute before the interval as Djurdjic grabbed his second following a handball in the box, before Dominick Drexler beat the offside trap to score the fourth.
A second penalty with six minutes left gave the hosts more daylight, as Senegalese forward Baye Djiby Fall made no mistake from the spot.
And the substitute was on hand to compound Celtic’s misery with two minutes left as he powered home a downward header for the sixth.
