Grab a comfortable seat, a cold beverage, and prepare for nine months of celebration, heartache and endless debate with your coworkers over Louis Van Gaal's selection policy: the Premier League is back! After the seemingly endless summer break, the world's richest and most exciting football league returns this weekend, with every team vying for success and survival. The excitement will be palpable at both ends of the table, but it is the glory of the Premier League title, the ultimate objective, that concerns us at the elite end of the division.
Last season's grand prize went to Chelsea, who won at an absolute canter, with a gap of eight points to their nearest rival Manchester City. The Blues were imperious from start to finish, leading the pack from virtually the first match to the last, suffering only three defeats along the way. The remainder of the top four, and consequently invitation to the grandest table in European football, the UEFA Champions League, was filled by Arsenal and Manchester United, both miles away from matching the consistency of their rivals at Stamford Bridge. And rounding off the top five were Tottenham Hotspur, the perennial "almost" team, who were left staring up at the established elite once again.
However, a new season brings fresh opportunities and promise of improvement, and in a league as unpredictable as the Premier League, no club can afford to rest on their laurels in the pursuit of the biggest rewards on offer. With most of the top squads in the division improving in their pursuit of the consistency that Chelsea produced the previous campaign, the 2015/16 season has the potential to be one of the most tightly contested and competitive in its 24 years of existence.
Who can live up to the weighty expectations placed on them by their demanding fans, whilst the competition cracks under the pressure of their supporters hopes? And will one club unexpectedly pierce through the professedly impregnable "Top Four"? The beauty of the English top flight is that anything can happen, but let us examine the likely top five come the season's close in May.
