About Principat

Founded in 1989, Club Esportiu Principat are the biggest club in the Andorran capital of Andorra la Vella and one of the most popular teams in the entire Andorran football league. After the formation of the Primera Divisió in 1995, Principat quickly emerged as the dominant force in the country, although their levels of success have since been exceeded by FC Santa Coloma. The team are known by a number of different nicknames, including 'El Principat' and 'Princi'.

Prior to the creation of the Primera Divisió, Principat had already started to establish themselves as a major force within the country, picking up the Copa Constitució in both 1993–94 and 1994–95. These early successes laid the foundation for their continued success in the remainder of the decade.

In 1996–97, the team won their first ever Primera Divisió championship and that win was followed by back-to-back titles in 1997–98 and 1998–99, as Principat began to dominate Andorran football. In addition to their league success, the club also achieved a string of consecutive Copa Constitució victories, with those wins coming in 1995–96, 1996–97, 1997–98 and 1998–99. The team also appeared in the UEFA Cup in 1997, 1998 and 1999, marking their arrival on the continental stage. However, despite their early dominance and despite remaining the second most successful team in Primera Divisió history, Principat have failed to win a major trophy since the turn of the 21st century. Indeed, since 2000, the club's best league performance was a 3rd place finish in the 2008-09 season.

Like the other teams in Andorra, Principat play all of their matches at one of two stadiums. The DEVK-Arena, in Sant Julià de Lòria, is able to hold 1,000 spectators, while the Estadi Comunal d'Andorra la Vella is slightly smaller and can only hold up to 850 fans.
