Benitez’s semantic pedantry is unlikely to rile Roman Ambramovic but the whole “massive mistake” and “agenda” accusations might not go down so comfortably. The club’s owner has already shown that whoever is in charge they might all as well carry the tag “interim” with Benitez the eighth manager to have a go at the job since Mourinho left in September 2007.
It is as unfortunate as it was inevitable that it would all end in tears for Rafa. He walked into the job with his eyes wide open. He knew he just had to try and enjoy the ride. Sadly he has not been able to do that. He may be the worse manager Chelsea have had in terms of results under Ambramovic but he is second only to Mourinho when it comes to entertainment off the pitch. Press conferences will be less interesting and colourful places in a Benitez-free Premier League.
