Raphaël Varane was born in Lille, France on 25 April 1993. A central defender, who is also able to play in a holding midfield role, he is known for his technique, passing, tactical awareness and ability to win headers. At times, his style of play has drawn comparisons with Fernando Hierro. Early in 2014, The Guardian included him in their list of the most promising young players in European football.

After starting out with nearby AS Hellemmes in 2000, Varane joined Lens' youth academy in 2002 and initially divided his time, playing for Lens at weekends and spending weekdays in Liévin, at the Centre de Préformation de Football. Over the years that followed, he enjoyed success, most notably winning the under-16 National Championship, before being promoted to the first team in 2010.

The 2010-11 season saw Varane make a total of 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals along the way and receiving significant praise from teammates and the media. Towards the end of the season, he was even given the captains armband for a match against Arles-Avignon. However, despite his impressive performances, he was not able to prevent Lens from suffering relegation to Ligue 2. After being linked with several European clubs, he completed a move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2011, with Madrid paying Lens a fee in the region of €10 million.

Varane made his debut for Real Madrid in a La Liga fixture against Racing Santander in September 2011, partnering Ricardo Carvalho and keeping a clean sheet. His second appearance for the side came just a few days later, against Rayo Vallecano, and Varane scored his first goal for the club during the match. In total, he appeared in nine league matches as Real Madrid were crowned as champions. The 2012-13 season was even more of a breakout season, as Varane made a total of 33 appearances in all competitions and impressed with his performances in the Champions League. His most notable performance came in the quarter final first leg against Galatasaray, where he ended up with 100% passing and tackling completion rates.

Having been involved with France's youth setup at both under-18 and under-21 level, Varane made his debut for the country's senior national team in 2013. He subsequently helped the side to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
