Lazio reduced the gap at the top of Serie A to five points with a heated 2-1 victory over Cagliari at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.

Marco Sau opened the scoring for Cagliari in the 62nd minute before Lazio defender Abdoulay Konko levelled proceedings with 11 minutes to go.

Cagliari were reduced to nine men late on when Michael Agazzi and Andrea Cossu both saw red for their involvement in a melee that ensued after Lazio were awarded a penalty that substitute Antonio Candreva converted in the 86th minute to hand the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.

Lazio, unbeaten in eight league matches, are second on the table with 39 points, while Juventus lead the way with 44 points and a game in hand.

Cagliari, on the other hand, could slip as low as 19th place depending on other weekend results in the wake of their sixth loss in a row.

Meanwhile, Catania drew 0-0 at home to Torino.

Catania climbed to eighth on the table with 26 points, while Torino remained 13th with 20 points.
