Shandong Luneng Taishan Football Club, usually known by the simplified name Shandong Luneng, was established in 1988 and entered the top flight of Chinese football for the first time in 1994. Shandong Luneng Group, a major electricity supplier, are the club's owners. In recent years, the team have been amongst the most successful in Chinese football. Their predecessor, Shandong Provincial Team, was founded back in 1956.

In the 1999 season, under the management of Slobodan Santrač, Shandong Leneng wrote themselves into the history books by clinching the league title and defeating Dalian Shide in the final of the Chinese FA cup. In doing so, they became the first team in the country to achieve a league and cup double. They later repeated this feat in 2006.

Since the re-branding of China's top division to the Chinese Super League in 2004, Shandong Luneng have been the league's most successful club, winning it on three occasions. They were crowned as champions in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Shandong Luneng also won the Chinese FA Cup in 1995, 1999, 2004 and 2006, meaning that they are the most successful side in that competition aswell. Additionally, in 2004, the team lifted the Chinese League Cup. To date, their best performance in the AFC Champions League came in 2005, when they reached the quarter final stage.

Zheng Zhi, Duvier Riascos and Emil Martínez are amongst the notable players to have represented the club and all three players were named Super League MVP while at Shandong Luneng. Former Chinese international striker Li Jinyu won two Golden Boot awards during his time at the club, and played a crucial role in most of the side's recent successes, before retiring in 2010.

The club play home matches at the Jinan Olympic Sports Center Stadium, which opened in 2009. The stadium was used as the main venue for the National Games of China in 2009 and is able to hold up to 60,000 spectators.
