Simeone: Copa del Rey semi not over yet
Feb 01, 2013 4:16 PM GMT
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone believes his side's Copa del Rey semi-final with Sevilla is still wide open.
Simeone's team claimed a 2-1 edge in the opening leg of the final four clash at Vicente Calderon, but the Argentine knows there is a lot of work to do before the return tie away from home on February 28.
"The score sheet never lies, and I think that it was a fair result because that is how the game finished," Simeone said.
"The tie is still very open, 50/50, and either team could still win it.
"All I know is that this is a great result for Atletico Madrid.
"In the second half we recovered very well from a difficult situation, after the sending off.
"It was a good and competitive game and I feel we deserved this result."
All the goals came from the penalty spot in an encounter that saw three players sent off.
Emir Spahic and Fernando Navarro saw red for Sevilla after both were adjudged to have handled in the area, but Simeone did not want to elaborate too much on the contentious decisions.
"From my position I have to be honest and say I didn't see it very well [the penalty]," he said.
"When you watch in on TV you can see that the player touches the ball with his hand and if the referee saw that then it is probably a penalty.
"I think that we did not calm the game when we were on top and we let them find a way back into the game.
"For me our best passage of play was in the first half, it was good to see a reaction from the players.
"The draw would have been a lot better for Sevilla, but eventually we managed to win the game and that was our goal."
