Both teams found creating chances difficult and Simeone insisted that his players gave everything they had despite being tired from playing a Copa del Rey semi-final only four days before.
"I'm happy with our performance in the match tonight," he said.
"The team responded very well along the 90 minutes. I thought we were in control, we had chances, especially from outside the box. We just missed that last pass to convert but overall I thought we played really well."
Simeone added: "You win a game when you score, today we didn't but we had a great rival in front of us, a team that have all week to work.
"I thought we were more comfortable than them, winning the ball and moving well in between lines we just needed that last pass to round a very good match."
Atletico are now just two points ahead of city rivals Real Madrid on the table and face Valencia next weekend to try and maintain their advantage.
