Northern Irish side Linfield won 2-0 at IF of the Faroe Islands in the first round of UEFA Europa League qualifying on Wednesday.

In the first leg of the tie, David Jeffrey's side claimed an excellent win at Torsvollur to put themselves in the box seat for a second-round berth.

Without a competitive match in more than two months, Linfield entered the clash as underdogs against IF, who sit second in the top-flight in the Faroe Islands.

But two strikes in the second half set Linfield on their way, with Andrew Waterworth giving them the lead when he scored from close range in the 68th minute.

And just six minutes later Linfield had doubled their lead as Philip Lowry – who had only been introduced three minutes earlier, for Waterworth – converted an assist from Michael Carvill.

Lowry turned and shot following Carvill's pass, and his excellent goal ensured Jeffrey's men would head back to Northern Ireland with the win.

The second leg of the tie will be played on July 10.

The two sides are vying for a berth in the second round of UEFA Europa League qualifying, which will feature the likes of Lech Poznan, Sparta Prague, Hajduk Split, Rubin Kazan, Standard Liege, FC Utrecht and Hibernian.
