About Ventspils

Futbola Klubs Ventspils was established in its current form in 1997, although the roots of the club can be traced back to the formation of FK Venta in 1964. The team, whose traditional colours are yellow and blue, have enjoyed major success within Latvia and are one of the most popular teams in the country.

Peviously, FK Venta were one of the country's dominant sides during the late 1960s, winning the Latvian Cup in 1967 and the Latvian league title in 1969. However, over the years that followed, the club's performances declined and they experienced financial difficulties. Finally, in 1997, they merged with FK Nafta, a team founded in 1995, in order to form FK Ventspils.

Since the merger, Ventspils have gone on to achieve major success, winning five Virslīga titles, with those wins coming in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2013. When FK Venta's 1969 title is added, the team have amassed a total of six Latvian league wins. Furthermore, Ventspils have lifted the Latvian Football Cup on six occasions, with FK Venta's 1967 success taking the tally up to seven. In the 2009-10 season, the club reached the group stage of the UEFA Europa League and in the process, they became the first Latvian side to qualify for the group stage of a major UEFA tournament. Their success as domestic level has also seen them granted entry into the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League.

Notable former Ventspils players include Vīts Rimkus, who was the Virslīga's top goalscorer for the 2007 and 2008 seasons, as well as Igors Sļesarčuks, who was also a prolific striker during his time with the club.

Ventspils' home games are held at Ventspils Olimpiskais Stadions. The stadium is one of the country's most famous venues, and is currently able to hold a total of 3,200 supporters.
