Villas-Boas: We deserved to go through
Feb 22, 2013 5:49 AM GMT
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas says his side's progression to the last 16 of the Europa League was no less than they deserved.
Spurs moved through thanks to a last-minute goal from Mousa Dembele at Lyon on Thursday. Spurs won the first leg 2-1 at home, but trailed 1-0 in the return after Maxime Gonalons struck for the hosts before Dembele's late effort sent Tottenham through 3-2 on aggregate, much to the manager's delight.
"Even if Lyon won the game, I think we should have been rewarded with something extra," Villas-Boas said.
"In the end, if you count the amount of opportunities that Lyon had in both legs, it would be unfair for them to have gone through, although they have been very well organised."
And Villas-Boas said the team was looking forward to their round-of-16 meeting with Inter Milan.
"We will approach the game to try and win it. It's going to be extremely difficult, as you can understand," he said.
"Not so long ago we had two magnificent games against them. And we just hope to recreate that special night that everyone still remembers at the club.
"Obviously, if we go through, after going through Lyon and Inter Milan, it puts you in a good position to win the competition.
"We've been having some great, great results. Hopefully it can serve as an inspiration."
