3 Things Midfielders Can Do to Better Support Their Forwards
Every position needs to work together if their team is going to play well. In order for forwards to succeed, it’s imperative for midfielders to be helping them throughout games.
Here are 3 ways midfielders should support their forwards:
1. Having good positioning
Midfielders need to be making sure they are in good spots in case the forward needs to play the ball back to them quickly.
A midfielder’s job is not done once they get the ball to the forwards. It becomes especially important to be in a supporting position right after playing them the ball.
Midfielders have to support forwards immediately afterwards by giving them an option to play out to if they get in trouble, or by making runs in the box to create an attacking opportunity for your team.
2. Constantly moving for them
Moving and having good positioning go hand in hand because midfielders have to move to be in a supporting position for them to play back to.
Another reason midfielders need to be constantly moving is to open up space for their other midfielders and their forwards. This way, there is space for the forwards to be able to run and play into.
This also creates havoc for the other team’s defense because have to make quick decisions and work harder to keep up with all the movement.
It’s important to let your forwards know where you are and where you want the ball if you’re making a run. It’s equally important to give them directions when you pass them the ball.
If they can turn, tell them, if they need to play it back you right away, ask for the ball back. If you’re making a run in the box, make sure you and another forward aren’t making the same run. If a forward is taking the ball down the sideline, and you are at the back of the box waiting for a cross, yell for them to play it to you.
When you have the ball, take charge but let them know what you’re going to do with it. For example, if you want to combine with them using a give and go, you can tell them verbally and you can also communicate with them through your movement.
As teammates, it is our jobs to make the game easier for one another, to pick each other up when we make mistakes, and to just be there for each other.
When forwards and midfielders work together, great things can happen for the entire team.
