A forensic analysis of Pittsburgh Steelers head coaches during the last 30 years would have yielded a comically short editorial. Black and Gold nation, who entertain a new head coach every generation or so, have had but three leading men since 1969, each of whom hoisted at least one Lombardi trophy.
Fortunately (for this piece, if not the fan base), the Washington Redskins haven’t been nearly as successful at hiring or patient while employing head coaches over the last three decades. The Redskins’ head coaching runs the gamut from a Hall of Famer to a one-time prodigy to a couple of blind reaches that ended in big hot messes. From 1981 to the present, the Redskins have had a total of nine supreme sideline beings, and since there’s more mystery about who’s the worst, the countdown starts with the best and snakes its way to a rather spectacular underbelly.
