4 Skills That All Players Can Learn From Carli Lloyd
Carli Lloyd is an incredible player to watch. She is an inspiration to many and if she wasn’t a household name before, she became one after she scored a hat trick in the World Cup final in 2015.
She doesn’t let the fact that she’s already one of the best stop her from continually trying to improve facets of her game. Her Instagram posts (@carlilloyd) chronicle how hard she works every single day in training to represent the United States as best as she can.
Here are four skills that all midfielders can learn from her:
1. Work ethic
Even if she is not having her best game skills wise, which is rare these days, her effort is always second to none. Nobody ever doubts how hard she is trying.
If you have nothing else going for you in a game or practice, you can control how much effort you put in. You can make your teammates better by trying as hard as you can at all times.
2. Playmaking abilities
Carli is the quarterback. She orchestrates the plays, she sets up the perfect balls for forwards, she wins her battles, she does everything in her power to put her team in the best position to win.
She takes shots, she wins head balls on crosses and corners, she gets to every ball first, she makes sure she is constantly involved and tuned in to the game. Even when it looks like she won’t be able to get to a ball in time, she does, because she digs deep and pushes through mentally.
The way she carries herself translates into her team feeding off of her positive energy.
She repeatedly works on things until she doesn’t make mistakes. Her trainer, James Galanis, says that he designs training sessions that will make her uncomfortable at first but by the end she will be comfortable. He says that then the next day he makes everything in training just a tad more difficult.
Midfielders need to understand, acknowledge, and embrace the importance of training outside of their comfort zones. When you’re uncomfortable, you’re trying new things and getting better.
Carli is proof of that.
4. Seizing opportunities and taking chances
If you ever see a 50/50 ball between Carli and her opponent, she wins its almost 100% of the time. This is because her mentality is that she isn’t going to let anyone beat her. Most of the time, she doesn’t.
She physically and mentally outplays everyone else because she recognizes the moments sooner.
