4 Ways to Mentally Prepare Yourself for a Game
Each player typically has a different way of preparing before games to play their best.
You have to do what is best for you because that will ultimately be the best for the team. It is important to keep in mind the team guidelines and trainer’s advice during this time as well.
Here are four ways to mentally prepare for a game:
1. Prepare your body
If your body feels ready, your mind will too. Taking care of your body before a game will make you feel more relaxed and ready. Some steps you can take include getting the proper amount of sleep and eating foods that help you play your best.
If your body feels like it’s in peak physical shape before game-time, you’re less likely to have anxiety about and during the game.
2. Prepare your mind
Focus on what needs to be accomplished. Get your head in the correct mindset. How are you going to get what you want out of this game? Visualize you having successes on the field.
You can also look at a scouting report for the other team if it’s available. Know what your team’s game plan is. Try not to think about schoolwork or anything off the field. You can also repeat confident phrases to yourself.
Having a positive attitude will take you further than you ever thought possible.
3. Listen to music
A lot of players like to listen to music before games. It can help improve concentration and get you excited for the game.
The genre of music is completely up to what works best for you. Some don’t like to listen to the typical pump up music because it can cause you to feel anxious. Other players prefer listening to laid back music because it relaxes them and helps them focus and think about what they need to do in this game in order to be successful.
Listen to music that helps you get in the zone.
4. Follow your routine
Most players have things they do each game day that helps prepare their mind and body to let it know to be ready for battle.
If your routine is helping you be successful on the field, continue to do it. The team will appreciate that you are taking steps to be successful, as that will help them succeed as well.
Make sure you are doing what works for you.
