Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee first reported the news of the injury. The injury occurred during a one-on-one punt coverage drill with rookie Marcus Cooper. Culliver fell to the ground in pain during the drill, and he had to be carted off the field to be examined. It wasn’t until an MRI was taken later in the day that revealed the extent of the damage.
Culliver was No. 3 on the 49ers’ depth chart at cornerback, and this is a significant blow to their defense. Even with the depth they have at the position, Culliver was expected to play a major role for the team.
San Francisco was expected to cut at least one of the players from their secondary, and chances are they’ll likely keep both Nnamdi Asomugha and Carlos Rogers into the regular season.
