A slight fracture was discovered after X-rays were taken earlier today in the right hand of the San Francisco 49ers defensive leader, Patrick Willis. The injury occurred during practice in a blitz pickup drill in which he collided with FB Bruce Miller, according to CSN’s Matt Maiocco.
While such an injury would normally be a concern for a player as important as Willis, the injury is not expected to sideline him for any regular season games. Willis has played through a broken hand on multiple occasions throughout his career, so this is nothing new for him. He should be able to carefully manage the injury and compensate where needed.
Willis is expected to have a reduced role throughout training camp, and he may potentially sit out preseason games as he continues to recover from the injury in order to ensure a full recovery in time for the regular season.
