The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly interested in signing free agent WR Austin Collie, according to Matt Barrows from the Sacramento Bee. A source told Barrows that the 49ers are waiting until after training camp begins before they make a move to sign him. They are purportedly waiting to test their current crop of receivers before making a decision.
The 49ers are hurting at the wide receiver position after Michael Crabtree tore his right Achilles’ heel back in May. Their current group of receivers are made up of A.J. Jenkins, Ricardo Lockette, Quinton Patton and Marlon Moore. It’s apparent that they desperately need help in the receiver department, and if Collie is recovered and ready to resume his career, he could be a nice addition to the team.
Collie’s once-promising career has been derailed by a torn patella tendon and several concussions, and he nearly missed the entire 2012 season. However, he’s reportedly fully recovered. Still, it remains to be seen how much he can contribute on the field at this point.
