5 Training Habits of Highly Successful Midfielders
How you play in games is often a result of how you train. Make sure you are training things you want to be doing in games.
These are 5 training habits that need to be continuously worked on in order to be a successful midfielder.
1. Strong and Resilient Mentality
How do you respond when things don’t go your way? Your attitude will directly correlate to your performance. Get your mind on the task at hand, focus on your strengths, and visualize yourself having success. Then go out there and play.
When a bad play happens, sometimes you need to work smarter, not harder and you need to recognize this. Having a strong mentality is especially important for midfielders because of how crucial they are to a team's success.
Midfielders need to have a chip on their shoulders. They need to be scrappy and not take “no” for an answer.
When they lose the ball, their immediate reaction should be to win it back. Their tackles should show no mercy. You aren’t going out there to purposely injure someone, but you are going to dominate the midfield any and every way you can.
Talking during practice will make it easier during games. Make sure you are saying necessary things and not talking just to talk.
Give your teammates good information. You want to communicate so much that it feels natural.
You need to be able to perform well, day in and day out. Consistency in training leads to consistency in games. This goes hand in hand with repetition.
If you repeatedly practice good form in passing drills, you will probably have more accurate passes in a game. Everyone has bad games, but at the very least, the effort should always be a constant.
5. Positive Self-Talk
Even when you make mistakes, you need to be your own biggest fan. Too much negativity in your own mind will likely just stress you out and make you play worse.
Tell yourself that you can do whatever you set your mind to, think positively, and then work towards what you want.
Training is the place where it’s okay to make mistakes because you should be trying new things. Keep your mistakes in perspective but also keep working towards your goals.
Midfielders have to be consistently winning the battle in the middle of the field if they want their team to have a good chance of winning.
Practicing these five habits will put you on the path to becoming a more successful midfielder.
