Clayborn was born on July 6, 1988 in St. Louis, Missouri. Clayborn was a four-year letterman in football and basketball at Webster Groves High School. There, he was the 2005 Missouri Player of the Year and was named to the Missouri All-State Team in 2004 and 2005.

Clayborn had his breakout year in 2009 as a junior. He recorded 70 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks. He was third in the Big-Ten in sacks and 10th in the nation in sacks.
As a senior, he was named a consensus First-team All-American and First-team All-Big Ten.

Clayborn was drafted with the 20th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He started all 16 games a s rookie, finishing with 42 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. He missed all but three games in 2012 due to injury, but returned in 2013 to start all 16 games again. In the 2013 NFL Season, Clayborn finished with a career-high 64 tackles and 5.5 sacks.
