Bio

Andrea Barzagli was born in Fiesole, Italy on 8 May 1981. A powerful, highly-rated central defender, he is known for his passing ability, concentration and strong positional sense. In 2012, he was named as the Serie A Defender of the Year.

A product of Rondinella's youth academy, Barzagli made his breakthrough into the club's first team squad in 1998. He went on to play over 50 games in Serie D and Serie C2, before moving to Serie B side Pistoiese in 2000 as part of a co-ownership deal. After briefly rejoining Rondinella, Barzagli moved to Piacenza in 2001, but was sent on loan to Ascoli for the 2001-02 and 2002-03 campaigns.

In 2003, Chievo signed Barzagli, allowing him to play Serie A football for the first time. Over the course of the 2003-04 season, he played 29 league games and weighed in with three goals. His performances caught the attention of Palermo, who signed him prior to the 2004-05 season. Whilst at Palermo, Barzagli established himself as one of the division's best defenders and was appointed club captain in 2007.

At the conclusion of the 2007-08 season, Barzagli became strongly linked with a move to Fiorentina, but instead opted to join Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, spending two-and-a-half seasons in Germany. The 2008–09 season was his most successful, as he helped the team to win the Bundesliga title. In the 2011 January transfer window, he moved back to Italy to join Juventus and experienced huge success with the side. Having played his way into the starting 11, often as part of a back three with Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, the team won back-to-back titles in 2011–12 and 2012–13. For both of those seasons, his performances earned him a place in the Serie A Team of the Year.

Barzagli has also experienced major success on the international stage. After making his debut for Italy in 2004, he went on to play a role in their 2006 World Cup win, featuring in two matches during the competition. After several years out of the international picture, partly in response to a disappointing Euro 2008, he went on to play a key role for Italy at Euro 2012, helping them to finish as tournament runners up.
