Bio

Anthony Spencer is entering his eighth season with the Dallas Cowboys. The athletic defensive end had been among the NFL’s rising stars until season-ending knee surgery ended a disappointing 2013 season. Spencer gained national recognition after tallying 95 combined tackles and 11 sacks in 2012, right after signing a franchise tender from Dallas. He is currently on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list as he continues to rehab his surgically-repaired knee.

Early Years & College

Spencer was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Jan. 23, 1984. He attended Bishop Leurs High where he was a three-year starter at both nose guard and fullback. Spencer, a two-time All-State selection, had 65 tackles (24 for loss) and seven sacks in his senior year. After graduating, Spencer went to Purdue University where he registered 7.5 sacks as a sophomore. In 2006, after an injury-plagued junior year, Spencer notched 93 tackles (26.5 for loss) and 10.5 sacks en route to All-Big Ten honors.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys selected Spencer in the first round of the 2007 NFL draft (26th overall) after acquiring the rights to the pick in an odd, in-conference draft-day trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. Spencer earned a starting spot, at outside linebacker, following an injury to incumbent Greg Ellis. He played in 16 games (six starts) as a rookie and collected three sacks. Spencer was a consistent contributor in his first six years in Dallas, highlighted by 11 sacks in 2012. In parts of seven seasons, he has accumulated 32.5 sacks and 363 combined tackles. His status remains uncertain entering 2014 due to a recurring knee injury.
