Bio

Arda Turan was born in Fatih, İstanbul on 30 January 1987. A winger, who is also capable of playing in a central attacking midfield role, he is known for his technique, dribbling ability and vision. Turan is an extremely creative player, who is often credited with assisting goals for his teammates, but is also able to chip in with goals of his own.

Having started playing youth team football for Altıntepsi Makelspor, Turan joined Galatasaray's academy in 2000 and spent several years there, before making his senior debut in 2005. During the 2005-06 campaign, he was sent on loan to Manisaspor in order to receive more first team opportunities and gain experience. The following year, he returned to Galatasaray, began to make more regular appearances for the side and was able to contribute eight goals in all competitions.

The 2007-08 season brought about major success, as Galatasaray were crowned as Süper Lig champions, with Turan playing a vital role. He contributed eight goals and 21 assists in all competitions, becoming one of the club's most productive players. In 2008-09, his progress continued, as he reached double figures for goals. Ahead of the start of the 2009-10 campaign, he was appointed as club captain, despite being just 21 years old at the time. The consistency of his performances is demonstrated by the fact that he was named Süper Lig Player of the Year for 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10.

At the conclusion of the 2010-11 season, Turan completed a move to Spain, where he joined Atlético Madrid for a fee in excess of €12 million. He quickly found success with the club, contributing to their UEFA Europa League success in 2011-12 with an assist during the final. Later in 2012, he also registered an assist during the side's UEFA Super Cup win over Chelsea. For both the 2011–12 and 2012–13 seasons, he was voted the Best Turkish Player in Europe.

After playing for his country at every youth level from under-16s upwards, Turan made his debut for Turkey's senior national side in 2006 and has since earned more than 50 caps for his country, becoming one of the team's star players. He was involved in Turkey's squad for UEFA Euro 2008, scoring two goals en route to the semi final stage of the competition, where they were eventually eliminated by Germany.
