Lanus have blasted four first-half goals past River Plate on their way to a 5-1 victory and second spot in the Argentina Primera Division.
Ismael Blanco scored twice for Lanus with both goals set up by Cristian Chavez, who scored the opener, while league-leaders Newell's Old Boys extended their lead at the top of the table with a 3-0 victory away to Atletico Rafaela.
At the Estadio Ciudad de Lanus on Sunday, the home side hit the front after just three minutes with Chavez tapping in the rebound after River Plate goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero had saved Guido Pizarro's initial effort.
River Plate equalised in spectacular fashion in the seventh minute when full-back Leonel Vangioni unleashed a rocket into the top corner but Lanus were ahead again five minutes later through Pizarro before Victor Ayala made it 3-1 in the 14th minute with a drive from the edge of the box.
Lanus continued their brilliant start in the 28th minute with Blanco running onto Chavez's through-ball before blasting his shot past Barovero.
The home side completed the scoring for the match five minutes after half-time as Blanco dinked Chavez's cross over the on-rushing Barovero, with Lanus wrapping up their biggest win over River Plate since the turn of the century.
The victory takes Lanus above River Plate on goal difference with the former rising to second in Argentina's top flight with 32 points and a game in hand on the latter.
Newell's Old Boys tops the division with 38 points after an own goal from Atletico defender Oscar Carniello, plus late strikes from Victor Figueroa and Maximiliano Urruti, earned three points for the pacesetters.
San Lorenzo are fourth on 31 points after a 1-0 win away to Independiente, while bottom club Argentinos Juniors continued their strong month with a 1-0 triumph over Colon.
Argentinos Juniors (15 points) have claimed two wins and two draws in their past four matches to move within a point of second-last Estudiantes, who lost 2-0 to San Martin de San Juan on Saturday.
In other results, Racing Club defeated All Boys 1-0, Tigre completed a scoreless draw with Belgrano, Union Santa Fe drew 1-1 with Velez Sarsfield and Boca Juniors overcame Arsenal 1-0.
