Argentine Primera Division Wrap: Tigre earn point at Lanus
Tigre have denied Lanus the opportunity to go top of Argentina's Primera Division, holding on for a scoreless draw at home.
Goalkeeper Damian Albil was the key man for Tigre as he made a number of crucial saves to deny Lanus' attackers, which kept the visitors in second position in the Primera Division despite leaders Newell's Old Boys only managing a draw away to Quilmes.
Newell's Old Boys were denied victory on Friday thanks to an 87th-minute strike from Quilmes attacking midfielder Miguel Caneo but Lanus failed to take advantage of that result on Monday thanks to Albil's impressive performance in Tigre's goal.
Lanus dominated at Tigre's Estadio Jose Dellagiovanna and produced a couple of gilt-edged scoring opportunities in the closing stages of the first half, with Albil denying Silvio Romero and Diego Gonzalez.
In the second half, Albil saved goal-bound shots from Mario Regueiro and Cristian Chavez as Tigre claimed their just their seventh point in nine Primera Division matches.
The result took Lanus to 28 points, one behind Newell's in the Argentine top tier's standings, while River Plate (26 points) are third after a 2-2 draw away to Union Santa Fe.
At Quilmes' Estadio Centenario Dr. Jose Luis Meiszner on Friday, Newell's hit the front after just eight minutes when Ignacio Scocco collected Maxi Rodriguez's deflected shot and slotted the ball home from a tight angle.
Scocco then won a penalty in the 31st minute but his spot-kick was acrobatically saved by Quilmes goalkeeper Silvio Dulcich.
That miss ended up costing Newell's when Quilmes captain Caneo smashed home a loose ball in the visitors' penalty area with three minutes remaining to salvage a draw.
San Lorenzo picked up the biggest victory of the weekend, thumping All Boys 3-0 on Sunday, while Independiente, Belgrano and Godoy Cruz all claimed 3-1 victories against San Martin de San Juan, Argentinos Juniors and Velez Sarsfield respectively.
In other Primera Division results, Arsenal defeated Racing Club 1-0, Estudiantes knocked off Atletico Rafaela 2-0 and Boca Juniors overcame Colon 1-0.
