Foster earned the starting spot as a freshman and rushed for 879 yards and five TDs in 11 games. As a sophomore, Foster dealt with injuries and was forced to split carries with LeMarcus Coker. He ended the season with just 322 rushing yards.
As a junior, Foster took over as the primary ball-carrier for Tennessee on his way to 1,193 rushing yards and 12 TDs to go along with 39 receptions for 340 yards and two TDs. He was expected to go in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft, but opted to return for his senior season. He only rushed for 570 yards and one TD as a senior, hurting his draft stock.
He was projected to go in the fifth or sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, but ended up going undrafted. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Texans on May 1, 2009.
After rushing for 257 yards and three TDs in six games as rookie, Foster took over as the starting in 2010. In the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts, Foster rushed for 231 yards and three TDs. He went on to lead the league in rushing yards (1,616) and rushing TDs (16) on his way to being named first-team All-Pro and to his first of three straight Pro-Bowls. He added a career-high 66 receptions for 604 yards and two TDs.
He would break the 1,000-yard mark in 2011 and 2012 before injuries limited him to just eight games in 2013. He finished 2013 with 542 rushing yards and one TD before he was place on the injured reserved.
