Benedict Tate is a running back for the Cleveland Browns. After playing three seasons with the Houston Texans, he signed with the Cleveland Browns as a free agent in 2014.
Tate was born on August 21, 1988 in Salisbury Maryland. He attended Stephen Decatur High School where he rushed for a state single-season record of 2,886 yards and 25 touchdowns. He transferred to Snow Hill high school where he rushed for over 2,000 yards in his senior year. He committed to Auburn University after high school.
As a sophomore Tate assumed the starting role as the featured running back. He rushed for 903 yards and eight touchdowns. After a disappointing junior year under a new offensive coordinator in a spread offense Tate’s productivity dropped but he managed to redeem himself in his senior season. He had a breakout year with 1,362 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns. Tate’s performance in his senior year elevated his draft stock and he was a projected second-round pick.
The Houston Texans traded up in the 2010 draft to select Tate in the second round. There were huge expectations for Tate after a subpar year in Houston. Unfortunately, he broke his ankle in the preseason. After being placed on injured reserve RB Arian Foster seized the opportunity.
Tate would return in 2011 and essentially experienced his rookie season despite being drafted in 2010. He showcased his talents as a running back with 942 rushing yards and four touchdowns as RB Foster’s primary backup. Although Tate has been productive when needed he wasn’t able to overtake Foster as the primary running back.
Tate signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and is the projected starting RB for the Browns.
